Modeling Example

When looking at complex nonlinear systems, it is often helpful to start with the
closest linear analog, because it can be analyzed much more thoroughly and mined for
theoretical insights that will assist in the nonlinear design.

For a complex system like a race car suspension, this usually means putting the linear
differential equations into a matrix "state-space" form for manipulation and analysis.

The major advantage of modeling complex linear systems this way is that the outputs of
the system do not have to be estimated by using "integration routines" to build a time history
of the answers by using immediately preceding derivatives and time intervals. Rather, the
equations of the complex but linear spring-mass-damper set can be solved explicitly, and so
the answers are calculated directly.
